Researchers from the Mass General Brigham Institute of Neurosciences have found that a blood test may help assess the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease in older adults even before the onset of initial symptoms.
The researchers believe this approach could serve as a valuable tool for identifying individuals with a higher likelihood of developing the condition and for enrolling them in trials of new medications and preventive strategies.
At the same time, the scientists note that the precise causes of Alzheimer’s disease have not yet been established. Key indicators of the disease include the buildup of amyloid plaques in the brain and the formation of tau tangles, which damage nerve cells.
Senior author of the study, Dr. Reisa Sperling, emphasized that maintaining a healthy lifestyle, getting adequate sleep, following a balanced diet, engaging in physical activity, and regularly exercising the brain remain crucial for reducing risks.
