
The intensification of the El Niño climate phenomenon in the Pacific region could trigger the most significant temperature anomalies seen in the last 150 years. Climatologists believe that the convergence of this process with overall global warming could make the coming years the hottest on record since meteorological observations began.
Historical data and coral reef studies confirm that El Niño has caused serious consequences in the past; however, the current cycle is unfolding against the backdrop of an already altered climate. The intense release of heat from the ocean is expected to trigger widespread droughts, wildfires, floods, and coral bleaching.
Experts predict that by 2027, the average global temperature could temporarily exceed pre-industrial levels by 1.7 degrees Celsius, breaching the 1.5-degree limit set by the Paris Agreement. Scientists estimate the economic impact of the current El Niño phase at approximately $10 trillion by 2032.
Michelle L’Heureux, a meteorologist with the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), noted clear signs of strong atmosphere-ocean interaction in the equatorial Pacific. He assesses that these indicators suggest the formation of one of the most powerful El Niño events in history.
Despite these alarming forecasts, the scientific community is currently refraining from stating definitively that the increased frequency of strong El Niño phases is a direct and irreversible consequence of global warming.
