The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has released details regarding an incident in which a man jumped naked into the river from the Brooklyn Bridge in New York.
It was revealed that Galymzhan Abaildayev, a citizen of Kazakhstan, climbed the Brooklyn Bridge on Sunday, August 2. He stripped completely, planted several flags—including the flag of Kazakhstan—and then jumped from the bridge into the river, RIA Novosti reports.
“On August 3, the New York Police Department charged Kazakhstani citizen Galymzhan Abaildayev with reckless endangerment, graffiti, public lewdness, trespassing, and disorderly conduct,” the agency stated.
According to the Department of Homeland Security, Abaildayev had entered the U.S. at least ten times since 2009; his first entry was on July 5, 2009, followed by approximately nine subsequent trips.
The agency noted that on April 4, 2023, Abaildayev received a U.S. work permit valid until April 28, 2025, and on March 30, 2025, a new permit was approved for him, valid until September 3, 2030.
The New York Post reported that he jumped from a height of approximately 85 meters (280 feet) off a Brooklyn Bridge tower after police attempts to persuade him to come down proved unsuccessful.
According to the publication, during the fall, Abaildayev allegedly used clothing or a bag as a makeshift parachute. After jumping into the East River, he was pulled from the water by rescuers and taken to a hospital, where doctors assessed his condition as stable.
