Space companies are pushing the boundaries by deploying data centers directly on satellites. In early 2026, Axiom Space launched two nodes of an orbital data center, and Kepler Communications sent up 10 satellites equipped with NVIDIA Jetson Orin modules for AI computations. These systems are interconnected via optical links. The goal is to process data closer to the source — for instance, analyzing satellite imagery in real time without relying solely on ground stations. SpaceX also announced plans for orbital data centers (like AI1) with significant computational power, aiming to support large-scale AI workloads in space. This shift could drastically reduce latency and enable new applications, from rapid disaster monitoring to advanced space-based communications.
