New research suggests that drugs similar to Ozempic (which are GLP-1 agonists) may weaken cravings for alcohol and other addictive substances, not just hunger. Scientists are tracing this effect to the lateral septum, a brain region that connects memories and surroundings with rewarding experiences. This area is densely packed with GLP-1 receptors. The findings imply that GLP-1 activation in the lateral septum could disrupt the brain’s communication between conscious thought about a reward and the compulsion to pursue it. If confirmed, this could open new avenues for treating both addiction and obesity
