Starting August 24, YouTube will change its view-counting methodology. A view will be counted from the moment playback begins. The new rules will apply to standard videos and live streams; YouTube Shorts will be counted using this method starting in 2025.
The previous metric will remain in YouTube Analytics under the name “Engaged views.” It reflects the number of times a user continued watching a video after the initial few seconds. This change may lead to an increase in public view counts, as they will now include even very brief video plays.
YouTube stated that the new methodology would not affect creator revenue or eligibility for the Partner Program. “Engaged views” for Shorts and watch time for standard videos will continue to be used to assess monetization.
