Two fishermen caught a massive Atlantic blue marlin off the coast of New England, the Associated Press reports.
According to charter boat captain Damon Sacco and his client Walter Chapman, it took them about three hours to haul the fish out of the water. Sacco admitted that he initially thought they had hooked a shark, but upon getting a better look, he realized it was an enormous marlin.
The fish measured over three meters in length and weighed 572 kilograms. During the struggle, the marlin’s pointed bill punched several holes in the boat.
Sacco and Chapman’s catch fell just 64.4 kilograms short of the world record.
The fish was butchered and the meat shared among 12 people, while the head was sent to a laboratory to determine the animal’s age. The marlin is estimated to be between 25 and 30 years old.
