The mother of an 18-year-old American who died in a car accident has stated that his organs and tissues were harvested without her consent. This was reported by the British newspaper The Mirror, citing an account given by Andrea Mauk.

Damon Mauk died on June 24, 2023, in the U.S. state of Ohio. His car veered off a rural road and crashed into a tree; at the time, his mother was in Costa Rica.
According to the woman, she was listed in her son’s medical records as the primary emergency contact, yet the hospital did not contact her. It later emerged that Damon—who was not a registered organ donor—had become a tissue donor.
Mauk claims that permission for the harvesting was granted over the phone by the young man’s biological father. She stated that the father had played almost no role in his son’s life and had never previously made medical decisions on his behalf.
Upon returning home, the mother learned that Damon’s eyes, skin, heart valves, ligaments, and other tissues had been harvested. According to her, the eyes were sent to Argentina, while some of the biological material went to research and commercial organizations.
The woman emphasized that she is not opposed to donation itself. She views the lack of informed consent from the family as the main issue and is demanding a change in the rules.
Mauk has launched a campaign for the enactment of a law she calls “Damon’s Law.” She is calling for a requirement that organizations obtain informed consent from relatives and ensure transparency regarding the subsequent use of donated tissues.
This story has gained public attention amidst a broader review of the U.S. transplant and tissue donation system. Federal authorities have previously identified violations, including issues related to procedures for determining patient death and communicating with families.
