
NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is now encapsulated inside its payload fairing, marking a critical milestone in the lead-up to its scheduled launch. This means the observatory has been securely sealed within the protective nose cone of its SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket, which will shield it during launch. The next steps involve mating the telescope to the rocket, conducting final fit checks, and a launch-readiness review. The mission, named after NASA’s first chief astronomer (often called the “mother of the Hubble Space Telescope”), aims to tackle some of the biggest mysteries in astrophysics. With a field of view at least 100 times wider than Hubble’s, Roman will conduct sweeping surveys to study dark energy (the force driving the universe’s accelerated expansion), map the evolution of galaxies, and conduct a comprehensive census of exoplanets. It will also use a coronagraph to directly image exoplanets by blocking out the bright light of their host stars. After launch, the telescope will travel to the L2 Lagrange point, about 1.5 million kilometers from Earth, where it will begin its scientific observations.
