
A recent study has shed light on a previously underappreciated mechanism linking maternal health to offspring. Researchers discovered that small extracellular vesicles containing RNA can pass through the placenta from mother to fetus. These vesicles are capable of altering the fetus’s metabolism, suggesting a pathway by which maternal obesity might influence the child’s metabolic profile — even beyond the effects of diet and hormones. This finding opens up new avenues for research into preventive strategies and could inform future interventions to mitigate metabolic risks early in development.
