The threat of renewed flooding in Nepal persists due to a lake formed where a landslide blocked the river, the Ratopati news outlet reports, citing Nepal’s flood forecasting service.
“The threat remains, as a lake has formed following the blockage of the river channel at the site of the flooding,” the report states.
According to the agency, the lake continues to grow in size, and there is a risk of it bursting.
“Given the current situation, residents living downstream of the Bhote Koshi River, travelers, and rescue workers involved in search operations are strongly advised to exercise extreme caution and remain in safe locations away from the riverbanks until further notice,” the outlet reports, citing official recommendations.
A massive surge of water rushed into the Bhote Koshi River in mountainous Nepal on Wednesday. The major flood was triggered by an earthquake and a subsequent landslide. More than 640 tourists are reported missing following the flooding in Nepal, including eight Russian nationals, according to the Nepal Tourism Board.
