Meta is testing robots in its data centers to automate physical tasks. The company has deployed robots from Watney Robotics, Kinova, and ABB to handle jobs like connecting cables, rebooting servers, and other routine maintenance. In one project, a Kinova Gen3 robotic arm is being used to remotely restart or shut down servers. The goal is to allow Meta to expand its data center capacity while controlling labor costs. If successful, these robots could take on up to 80% of certain employees’ workload. The initiative also reflects broader trends: as AI models become more capable, there’s growing interest in «physical AI» that can operate in real-world environments.
