Formula 1 teams have unanimously backed a proposal to shorten the Grand Prix race distance starting in 2027.
Race distances will be reduced by five percent—from 305 km to 290 km. The Monaco Grand Prix will remain an exception, retaining its current distance of 260 km.
The decision stems from the shift to new power units in 2027, which will see an increase in the internal combustion engine’s contribution and higher fuel consumption. Shortening the race distance will allow teams to avoid the significant costs associated with a radical redesign of their cars. Additionally, drivers will face fewer challenges regarding fuel management.
