
Researchers at MIT have developed injectable «mini livers» that could provide a less invasive solution for patients with failing livers. The team mixed liver cells (hepatocytes) with hydrogel microspheres and supportive fibroblast cells. When injected, the microspheres help the cells cluster together and connect with the body’s bloodstream, forming functional tissue grafts. In mouse studies, these grafts remained viable for at least two months, successfully producing liver enzymes and proteins. Scientists envision this technology as either an alternative to surgery or a «bridge» to transplantation, supporting a patient until a donor organ becomes available.
