A woman in Greece has given birth to a baby following the transfer of an embryo that had been frozen for 22 years. The newspaper Kathimerini reported on this remarkable event.

“A 54-year-old woman from Athens gave birth to a baby after the transfer—performed in December—of an embryo that had been frozen more than 22 years ago,” the report states.
Christina Rapti-Dzelepi underwent fertility treatment in 2004, resulting in the birth of a son. He died in a car accident in 2025. Subsequently, the woman decided to use embryos remaining from her initial treatment. The result was the birth of a baby girl weighing 3,490 grams. Doctors have described the case as unique.
Advances in genetics are being utilized in reproductive medicine to ensure the birth of healthy babies through modern technologies, noted Maria Byakhova, a laboratory geneticist.
In the United States, a baby was born from an embryo that had been stored for 30 and a half years. The embryos were created in 1994—when the future father was still a very young child—and were transferred through a Christian “embryo adoption” agency.
