The silhouettes of the World Trade Center’s Twin Towers reappeared over New York a quarter-century after the September 11 attacks. A massive light display over the harbor was created by 2,977 synchronously controlled drones.

The drones arranged themselves into the outlines of the two skyscrapers, matching their actual architectural scale. For several minutes, the towers of light became part of the Manhattan night skyline. The show was titled “2,977 Lights Over New York Harbor.” The number of drones used corresponded to the death toll of the September 11, 2001 attacks, excluding the 19 hijackers.
A total of 2,977 people lost their lives in the four coordinated attacks. Terrorist-hijacked airliners crashed into the World Trade Center towers and the Pentagon, while another plane crashed in Pennsylvania. The National September 11 Memorial, opened in 2011, now stands on the site of the destroyed Lower Manhattan skyscrapers; two deep, reflecting pools trace the footprints of the North and South Towers.
