A British woman discovered a collection of gold coins that her husband had hidden in an old biscuit tin about 50 years ago, The Independent reports.
The discovery was made while the couple was preparing to move house. The tin had been sitting in a workshop, unassuming; inside, however, were silver coins, and beneath them lay 41 South African gold Krugerrands and 21 British gold Sovereigns.
It turned out that the woman’s late husband had purchased the gold in the mid-1970s; the coins were in their original packaging, accompanied by the purchase documents. At the time, a single Krugerrand cost around £80.
It appears the man had kept the investment a secret.
The collection has since been auctioned off, fetching approximately £100,000 for the Krugerrands and around £13,000 for the Sovereigns.
