While astronomers have long known that the solar system’s innermost planet is contracting as its iron core cools, a new study published today reveals the process is far more drastic than anticipated. Advanced structural mapping indicates that Mercury has shrunk by 10% to 30% more than previous calculations showed. This equals a total loss of up to 23 kilometers (14.5 miles) in radius since its formation 4.5 billion years ago, creating massive faults and cliff-like wrinkles that slice across its scarred surface.
