The 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics has been officially awarded to Belgian-American physicist Francis Halzen for his pioneering contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. Decades ago, Halzen conceptualized using the vast, crystal-clear deep ice beneath the South Pole to trap elusive subatomic particles known as “ghost particles” or neutrinos. This massive one-cubic-kilometer instrument has successfully opened a completely new window into astronomy, allowing researchers to trace high-energy cosmic radiation back to its violent origins in distant galaxies.
