The European Space Agency’s Euclid space telescope has unexpectedly discovered a previously unknown comet while conducting its mission to study dark matter and dark energy. The object, now officially designated C/2026 S1 (Euclid), was found approximately 1.3 billion kilometers from Earth.
What makes the discovery particularly impressive is that Euclid was never designed to search for comets. Researchers identified the object using specialized software capable of detecting movement across deep-space observations.
Scientists believe this finding demonstrates how missions designed for one scientific purpose can produce unexpected discoveries that expand our understanding of the solar system.
