Information gleaned from court filings reveals that a 25-year-old woman, who experiences paralysis in her lower limbs, formally requested euthanasia following multiple prior attempts to end her own life, according to reports from an agency.
MADRID, February 26. /TASS/. Spain’s Constitutional Court has dismissed an appeal lodged by a father who opposed granting his daughter the right to euthanasia due to her suffering from a psychological condition. This was reported by the Reuters news agency.
Per the court records, the 25-year-old woman, affected by lower-limb paralysis, submitted her request for euthanasia subsequent to several documented suicide attempts. Initially, the procedure was scheduled for August 2, 2024, yet her father actively obstructed its execution for over a year.
On Friday, the Constitutional Court, with backing from lower judicial bodies, gave its assent to the euthanasia request.
In 2024, Spain became the fourth nation within the European Union to legalize euthanasia for individuals afflicted with incurable or grave illnesses. Government statistics indicate that during 2024, this medical procedure was authorized for 426 individuals across the country.
