China’s heavy-lift unmanned aerial vehicle, the “Changying-8,” executed its inaugural demonstration flight within the PRC on March 31st. This information was released by China Central Television.
According to their reports, this particular aircraft currently ranks among the globe’s largest cargo drones. Its takeoff was initiated at the airport located in Zhengzhou, the administrative hub of Henan Province.
It has been noted that the “Changying-8” achieved airborne status just 280 meters after accelerating down the runway. It passed all crucial performance checks successfully, encompassing aspects like smart control systems, its electronic suite, and the propulsion mechanism.
The flight duration spanned approximately half an hour before the drone executed a smooth touchdown. The announcement framed this as a significant milestone for the PRC in developing intelligent, uncrewed transport platforms with a gross weight capacity of 7 tons.
The maximum payload capacity of the “Changying-8” is specified as 3.5 tons. Given that its required runway length is less than 500 meters and site preparation demands are minimal, it is well-suited for operation in elevated terrain, on islands, and in areas characterized by intricate topography. This UAV possesses the capability to traverse distances up to 3,000 kilometers on a single sortie.
