German warships scuttled during World War II have re-emerged from the Danube in Serbia, Reuters reports. The wrecks are visible near the port of Prahovo due to low water levels caused by intense heat.
The vessels were scuttled in 1944 during Operation “Danube Elf.” In an effort to halt the Red Army’s advance, the German command destroyed over 200 vessels, including barges, patrol boats, and hospital ships.
Due to the receding Danube, Hungary’s Paks Nuclear Power Plant was fully shut down for the first time in 44 years on the night of August 2. One of the last two operating units was taken offline at 1:30 a.m. (2:30 a.m. Moscow time), and output will drop to 240 MW, Prime Minister Péter Magyar announced on X.
