Meta✴ has announced the commencement of a no-cost, four-week training curriculum named the LevelUp Fiber Technician Pathway, designed to address the pressing shortage of skilled personnel in fiber optic networking. The multi-year endeavor will be overseen by CBRE, a firm specializing in real estate and critical infrastructure services. The initial cohort of technicians is anticipated to commence their training this summer. Indeed, Meta✴ has a substantial need for these professionals—the company is set to allocate $6 billion to Corning for fiber optic cabling alone, manpower being essential for the inspection, installation, and connection of these crucial assets.
Meta✴ highlighted that the field of fiber optic technicians, and the construction sector broadly, is grappling with a nationwide labor shortfall precisely when the demand for data centers is at an all-time high. This program aims to equip participants with the requisite technical proficiencies to excel in sought-after fiber technician roles, both within construction and data center operations. Upon successful completion, graduates will have opportunities to work on Meta✴’s construction sites across the US via its network of contractors. Other hyperscalers are implementing comparable initiatives; for instance, Google has recently been focusing resources on training electricians.

Meta✴ is proud to invest in training the technical experts needed to support our ambitious infrastructure goals,” stated Meta✴. Currently, Meta✴ operates or is constructing 27 data centers within the United States. Since 2010, these development projects have generated over 30,000 temporary positions for skilled tradespeople during construction, alongside more than 5,000 permanent jobs.
