The IIHF World Championship is ongoing in Switzerland. Unfortunately, without the Russian national team. However, the influence of our Kontinental Hockey League can still be felt at the tournament. For instance, Adam Liška, a forward for Severstal Cherepovets, is playing for the Slovakian team and doing quite well.
For the 2026 World Championships, Slovakia is missing several star players who propelled the team to a fourth-place finish at the recent Winter Olympics in Milan. Consequently, other players have had to step into leadership roles. Adam Liška is one of them.
Just recently, the Slovaks played what has been their most challenging game out of the three so far. They only managed to overcome the tournament’s biggest surprise, Slovenia, in a shootout with a score of 5-4. It’s worth recalling that the Slovenians, in their opening match, stunned the Czechs 3-2, despite trailing 0-2 at one point.
The Slovaks also had to endure some tense moments. Liška opened the scoring just two minutes into the game, but Slovenia equalized before the first intermission. The underdogs managed to catch up with their opponents three more times. Even a goal from Faško-Rudaš, with Liška among his assists, couldn’t help Slovakia pull away. Nevertheless, the Slovaks proved more fortunate in the post-game shootout lottery.
