There isn’t one single answer to the question of how often one should shower. The frequency of hygiene routines depends on numerous elements: lifestyle, skin type, climate, level of physical exertion, age, and health condition.
If a person doesn’t engage in strenuous physical labor or sports, doesn’t live in a hot climate, and their skin isn’t prone to excessive sweating, then a daily shower might not be essential. Washing 3-4 times weekly is sufficient.
For individuals with dry or sensitive skin, showering every other day is adequate. More frequent washing can disrupt the skin’s natural protective barrier.
“In older individuals, sweat glands function less actively. They are advised to wash once every 1-2 days and use mild cleansing products with a neutral pH that preserve the skin’s lipid layer without over-drying or irritating it,” explains gynecologist, urologist, venereologist, and plastic surgeon Igor Bertrand.
The only phase of life when a daily shower is necessary is during puberty. Hormonal shifts often lead to increased skin oiliness and perspiration, and showering helps maintain hygiene, prevent breakouts, and avoid unpleasant odors.
