During the evacuation of passengers from a vessel where a Hantavirus outbreak was identified, a member of Spain’s Civil Guard passed away from a heart attack, as stated by the Kingdom’s Interior Minister, Fernando Grande-Marlaska.
“I wish to extend my condolences to the family, friends, and, of course, the Civil Guard. He was a guard with extensive service experience and an absolutely commendable dedication,” he remarked.
The outbreak of the deadly Hantavirus occurred on the Dutch cruise ship MV Hondius, which was en route from Argentina to Cape Verde. The WHO confirmed seven cases of infection, three of which were fatal.
Following a stop at Cape Verde, the vessel arrived at the island of Tenerife. Spanish authorities arranged for a phased disembarkation and repatriation of individuals. A Russian national from the crew will continue their journey to the Netherlands, where the liner will undergo disinfection.
