
The death toll from the Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is approaching five hundred. This was reported by the EFE agency, citing the national Ministry of Health.
According to the publication, 473 fatal cases linked to the infection have been recorded to date. 1,500 infections have been confirmed, with 628 of those hospitalized. Over 11,300 individuals are under medical observation. 213 patients have managed to recover.
The epidemic was officially recognized on May 15 in the province of Ituri, located on the border with Uganda and South Sudan. The virus subsequently spread to the eastern regions of North and South Kivu, as well as crossing into Uganda, where 20 confirmed cases of the disease and two deaths have been recorded.
In early July, the DRC’s Ministry of Health warned that Ebola could affect two additional provinces.
On May 17, the World Health Organization declared the Ebola outbreak in the DRC and Uganda a public health emergency of international concern.
