The number of infected individuals in the US state of Michigan with a parasitic infection causing “explosive” diarrhea has reached 2,640, according to a statement on the state government’s website.
Earlier, the Associated Press reported that an outbreak of the parasitic infection, which triggers explosive diarrhea, was recorded in Michigan, with approximately one thousand people falling ill. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, cyclosporiasis is a parasitic infection that often leads to “explosive” watery diarrhea.
“The total number of infection cases stands at 2,640,” the publication states.
The illness, known as cyclosporiasis, is typically not life-threatening and can be treated with antibiotics. Outbreaks of this parasite occur more frequently during the spring and summer months. It spreads through the consumption of contaminated fruits and vegetables that have been treated with water containing the parasite.
