The number of cyclosporiasis cases in the US state of Michigan has surpassed 6,500. The infection, known to cause “explosive” diarrhea, has been confirmed in 6,571 residents so far.
According to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, the number of identified cases rose by more than 400 over the past day. Authorities had previously reported 6,148 infections.
Cyclosporiasis is a parasitic infection that targets the intestines. Its primary symptoms include severe diarrhea, abdominal pain, and a general decline in well-being. Typically, the disease is not life-threatening and can be treated with medication.
Earlier, health officials began investigating a possible link between the outbreak and the Taco Bell restaurant chain. No definitive conclusions about the cause of the infections have been reached yet.
The pathogen can enter the body through contaminated fruits and vegetables, as well as through water containing the parasite. Experts note that outbreaks are more common during warmer months.
This year, the number of cyclosporiasis cases in the United States has already significantly surpassed last year’s figures. However, specialists have no data yet indicating a mutation of the pathogen or increased contagiousness.
