Google has started rolling out a new method for logging into accounts using selfie videos. This technology is primarily designed for account recovery, for example, when a user has forgotten their password.
To activate it, you need to record a short video once, following on-screen prompts and turning your head at various angles. Later, when attempting to log in, the system will ask you to record a new video and compare it to the saved sample to verify the account owner’s identity.
The company notes that the saved selfie video can be deleted at any time through the account settings. The recording is only used to verify identity during login, unless the user separately agrees to its use for other purposes. The video is stored in an encrypted format.
According to Google, the new system incorporates multiple layers of security to minimize the risk of fraud involving fake photos and videos. This feature is gradually becoming available to some users. You can check whether it is supported for your specific account in your Google account settings.
