An underground “milky” pool has been discovered in Lechuguilla Cave in New Mexico; researchers believe it may have remained inaccessible to humans for hundreds of thousands of years. The Daily Star reported the find.
The pool is located at a depth of approximately 213 meters. Although the water appears milky in photographs, it is actually clear; the unusual color is created by the white limestone surrounding the pool.
Scientists believe the pool formed from ancient rainwater that seeped through the limestone. Finger-like formations were also spotted on the bottom; researchers speculate that these may be colonies of bacteria that developed in complete isolation.
Access to Lechuguilla Cave is restricted; only scientists and experienced cavers with special permits are allowed to enter.
