Researchers developed a form of spirulina that produces biologically active vitamin B12 at levels comparable to beef. The breakthrough came by carefully controlling the light conditions during the algae’s growth. Most conventional spirulina contains a form of B12 that the human body cannot utilize, but this new method overcomes that limitation. The resulting biomass (1.64 µg of active B12 per 100 grams) could offer a sustainable, plant-based solution to address vitamin B12 deficiencies, particularly for vegetarians and vegans.
