During a meeting with US President Donald Trump, Chinese President Xi Jinping announced that two pandas would arrive at Zoo Atlanta in the coming days. He emphasized that pandas serve as envoys of friendship between the peoples of China and the United States.
“Today, I would like to share some good news: in a few days, two pandas—Ping Ping and Fu Shuang—will arrive at their new home at Zoo Atlanta and meet American visitors,” Xi Jinping stated during his visit to the White House.
The US first received two pandas in 1972 following President Richard Nixon’s visit to China. In April, the China Wildlife Conservation Association announced that it would send two giant pandas to Zoo Atlanta.
