Joan England, a UK resident, has celebrated her 100th birthday. According to The Shuttle, she marked the milestone surrounded by her nearest and dearest; the celebration was attended by her two children, four grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
It was her family that the centenarian cited as the main secret to her longevity. She says that her large, close-knit family gives her strength and the desire to keep living. There were no special diets or elaborate exercise routines—just the warmth of her loved ones.
However, there are other recipes for longevity. Previously in Japan, Shigeko Kagawa, the country’s oldest resident, passed away at the age of 115. Kagawa worked as a doctor until the age of 80 and walked about five kilometers every day.
In her later years, she took up calligraphy and puzzles to keep her mind sharp. Her relatives recall that she lived by a strict schedule: going to bed and waking up at the same time and eating three meals a day. A medical check-up a year before her death revealed that she had no chronic illnesses, despite never having taken any medication.
