The flow of Russian tourists to North Korea has reached an all-time high in fifteen years. From July to September 2025, 3,460 Russian citizens visited the DPRK, which is 25% more than in the spring. Analysts attribute this surge in interest to the opening of a new resort complex. Wonsan as a Growth Driver The main reason for the tourist boom was the opening of the resort complex in Wonsan. The first organized tours started in mid-July and instantly gained popularity. However, recreation at the new resort belongs to the premium segment: a week-long tour for two costs an average of 300,000 rubles, and this is without considering airfare. Barbed Wire Enclosed Territory Holidays in Wonsan have their strict limitations. Tourists report that despite the huge territory of the complex, only a small isolated area is allocated for foreigners. The entire perimeter is fenced with barbed wire, and leaving beyond its limits is prohibited. Swimming is only allowed on the beach adjacent to the hotel, and visiting areas where local residents are vacationing is strictly forbidden.
