A biodegradable patch promotes the regeneration of heart tissue. The results of preclinical trials are published in Acta Biomaterialia. According to the lead author of the study, Wuqian Zhu, heart damage after a heart attack is often irreversible because the organ is unable to form new muscle fibers on its own. In animal experiments, the patch improved the heart’s pumping function, reduced scar tissue formation, encouraged the growth of blood vessels, and reduced inflammation.
