OpenAI was obliged to adjust the performance of its ChatGPT chatbot subsequent to revelations that it was prone to referencing fantastical beings, such as goblins and gremlins, within its user responses. This situation stemmed from specific characteristics associated with the activation of the “Nerd” mode.
OpenAI needed to implement adjustments to ChatGPT’s operation following the discovery that it frequently referenced goblins, gremlins, and other legendary figures in its replies, according to an announcement on the firm’s official platform.
“Beginning with the GPT-5.1 iteration, our models developed an unusual propensity: they habitually integrated creatures like goblins and gremlins into their metaphors… This pattern varied across different model generations, with the population of goblins increasing, necessitating an investigation into the source of their proliferation,” the official statement elaborated.
OpenAI clarified that during the neuro-network’s configuration, the system’s training was inadvertently calibrated to favor frequent mentions of mythical entities when users engaged with it while the Nerd persona was selected. Based on the data gathered, the highest incidence of these “goblins” was observed in the responses generated by the GPT-5.4 version.
Once this phenomenon was recognized, the organization conducted an inquiry that concluded the frequent incorporation of mythological entities was directly attributable to users predominantly opting for the Nerd persona when interacting with the AI.
The company determined that the incentive or reward mechanism within the neuro-network for referencing these mythical figures was significantly amplified when this particular communication style was chosen. Further analysis uncovered a “whole lineage of other entities” within the technology’s vocabulary, encompassing raccoons, trolls, ogres, and pigeons.
Consequently, OpenAI was compelled to retire the option for selecting the Nerd personality and revise the model’s training regimen to substantially reduce the incidence of mythological creature references.
