Google has publicly announced the extensive rollout of its sophisticated artificial intelligence assistant, Gemini, specifically for vehicles equipped with Google’s native infotainment systems (Google built-in). Differing significantly from the traditional Google Assistant, Gemini features profound integration with the vehicle’s internal systems and the capacity for fluid, natural conversation, thus eliminating the need for drivers to memorize rigid, specific voice prompts.
This enhancement is not limited to brand-new vehicle models; it is also being delivered to cars already in use via Over-The-Air (OTA) software updates. A major collaborator in this initiative is the General Motors group: Gemini will soon be available across 4 million vehicles from Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC manufactured starting from the 2022 model year onwards. Owners of Polestar and Volvo vehicles have already begun receiving these corresponding updates.
Natural Dialogue Capability: Drivers are empowered to pose multi-faceted queries (“Locate a supermarket on my route and then message my mom letting her know I’ll be late”) and make mid-conversation adjustments.
Message Contextual Processing: The AI possesses the function to summarize incoming text messages, aid in drafting replies, and even translate those messages into upwards of 40 different languages.
Mood-Based Media Control: Instead of specifying exact songs, users can request things like “Play something upbeat for a drive with the kids,” with the AI capable of curating a playlist informed by the current route context.
Electric Vehicle Data Access: Gemini furnishes immediate data regarding battery status, remaining driving range, and assists in charting journeys while factoring in necessary charging stops.
The deployment commenced in the United States, initially targeting users who operate in English. Google intends to broaden the geographical reach and language options over the subsequent months, alongside integrating Gemini with other applications such as Gmail and Google Calendar, which will allow a driver, for example, to verbally retrieve an address directly from an email in their inbox.
