Energizer made a public announcement today regarding the launch of its fresh Energizer Ultimate Child Shield lithium coin cell batteries, specifically the 2032 size, tailored for use in Apple AirTag devices.
These Child Shield cells are formulated to prevent chemical burns should they be swallowed, and they incorporate a coloring agent that turns the mouth blue upon coming into contact with saliva. Energizer asserts this feature grants guardians the ability to swiftly address any accidental ingestion incidents. Furthermore, the batteries feature a bitter coating intended to discourage children from putting them in their mouths.
When AirTags were introduced back in 2021, a concerned Australian retailer temporarily halted sales, citing worries because the tracker’s rear panel can be opened to access the embedded battery. Opening an AirTag requires a press-and-turn operation—a two-step mechanism Apple maintains adheres to established international child safety standards.
Following public scrutiny, the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission issued a caution to parents, advising them to keep AirTags out of children’s reach. The ACCC expressed apprehension that the required press-and-turn action might not offer adequate safeguarding against young children accessing the battery.
In the United States, Apple updated the AirTag packaging to include a warning label stating that the coin cell battery must be kept away from children due to the risk of injury or death if swallowed. Additionally, during the process of replacing the battery in an AirTag, Apple integrated a warning about the general dangers associated with coin cell batteries within the Find My application.
