The United Nations is teetering on the brink of financial collapse, with the United States and China reportedly withholding their contributions, according to The Wall Street Journal.
The newspaper points out that the US currently owes the UN a staggering $4 billion in overdue payments. It’s also noted that the US has disengaged from numerous UN programs and agencies, including the World Health Organization (WHO). Furthermore, the WSJ asserts that China’s outstanding contributions to the UN amount to $455 million.
“The UN is facing insolvency as the US and China have halted payments to the organization amid a struggle for control,” The Wall Street Journal reports, emphasizing that the UN’s fundamental operating costs are reliant on contributions from both these nations, accounting for 42% of its budget.
The publication details that in response to these financial strains, the UN has implemented “sweeping austerity measures.” These actions include the closure of some offices, the elimination of 3,000 positions within the secretariat, and reduced working hours for translators. Additionally, escalators have been shut down, and issues with the facade of the UN headquarters in New York have been left unaddressed as part of the cost-cutting efforts.
“The UN lacks the ability to borrow funds, and its leadership possesses limited authority to restructure operations or dismiss staff, whose salaries constitute 70% of its expenditures,” the outlet clarifies.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the 193 member states of the organization dictate staffing levels and tend to favor the introduction of “new initiatives” over reducing the UN’s approximately 40,000 programs. It is highlighted that the UN manages separate budgets for its core operations and peacekeeping initiatives, while specialized agencies independently determine their spending and bureaucratic structures.
