
Google, a U.S.-based corporation, is petitioning the U.S. government for authorization to release up to 32 million sterilized mosquitoes in California and Florida, as reported by The Guardian. The objective of this initiative is to diminish the populations of insects that transmit diseases such as dengue, Zika virus, West Nile fever, chikungunya, and malaria.
The underlying principle of this approach involves infecting male mosquitoes with the naturally occurring bacterium Wolbachia. These males do not bite humans. However, after they mate with wild females, their offspring do not hatch, which consequently leads to a gradual reduction in the mosquito population. To streamline this procedure, Google is leveraging data analysis, sensors, and artificial intelligence-powered computer vision for the cultivation, sorting, and precise release of male mosquitoes in designated locations and quantities.
