Matteo Arnaldi, ranked 104th in the world, an Italian player, explained his decision to withdraw from the semifinals against his compatriot Flavio Cobolli at Roland Garros.
“Yesterday, I felt fine. I went for my practice session and then had dinner. Afterward, I started experiencing stomach pain, and I thought to myself, ‘Okay, it’s just indigestion.’ I woke up at one in the morning feeling nauseous and quite unwell. This morning, I was sick again and felt even worse.
The doctor who came to my room gave me some medication. Throughout the day, every time I tried to eat or drink anything, I had to rush to the bathroom.
I feel that if I were to eat anything now, I would become sick again. Therefore, I believe the most sensible course of action is to withdraw from the tournament,” the Italian stated during a press conference.
Consequently, Flavio Cobolli advanced to the final by walkover. He is set to face the German Olympic champion, Alexander Zverev, in the championship match.
