
SpaceX has officially unveiled its inaugural space-based data center, a satellite designed for artificial intelligence computations, bearing the codename AI1.
During a 30-minute video walkthrough of their manufacturing ecosystem in Bastrop, Texas, CEO Elon Musk articulated the vision: to overcome the limitations of terrestrial power grids by deploying large-scale AI data centers directly into Earth’s orbit.
Based on the blueprints and presentation shared by Musk and a SpaceX engineer, the AI1 is engineered as a self-contained orbital computing hub. Musk highlighted that AI1’s peak power capacity of 150 kW is directly comparable to an Nvidia GB300 AI on-premises server rack, which draws around 140 kW at its peak. However, relocating this infrastructure to orbit completely sidesteps the significant power and spatial constraints that currently impede the expansion of ground-based facilities. The satellite will boast a wingspan of 70 meters and a total height of 20 meters.
“The AI satellite is much simpler than a Starlink satellite,” Musk explained. “An AI satellite is essentially a bunch of solar arrays. You still need laser link communications, but you don’t have all these extremely complex phased array antennas. It’s bigger, but most of the technology has already been developed for Starlink V3 satellites. We don’t see it as a very difficult endeavor compared to what we’re already doing.”
To manage the heat generated by these orbital server racks, the satellite incorporates an extensive liquid cooling system spanning 110 square meters. This system features redundant pump loops and integrated micrometeoroid protection, efficiently radiating heat directly into the vacuum of space.
In preparation for the production of these satellites, SpaceX is constructing a new, colossal 1 million square meter manufacturing facility.
Previously, Elon Musk had indicated that future orbital data centers for AI would be considerably less complex to develop than current Starlink communication satellites.
