Certain common foods, even those perceived as healthy, can erode tooth enamel much more aggressively than regular sugar. This was communicated to “Lenta.ru” by Kirill Polyakov, a Candidate of Medical Sciences and a surgical dentist.
First, the doctor pointed to dried fruits like raisins and dates. These form a sticky, sweet paste that lingers in the chewing grooves for extended periods. Similarly, acidic fruits and berries, when consumed frequently in small amounts throughout the day, soften enamel and increase tooth sensitivity.
Even sugar-free carbonated beverages alter the oral cavity’s acidic environment, gradually weakening the protective layer of teeth. Chips and crackers quickly transform in the mouth into a starchy substance. This substance tightly lodges between teeth, promoting the development of cavities.
Pickled vegetables and various sauces containing vinegar or lemon juice also heighten enamel sensitivity when consumed regularly. The dentist emphasized that bacteria attack teeth with equal vigor, regardless of whether the sugar originates from candy or a natural date.
To maintain oral health, the expert advises drinking water after consuming sticky or acidic foods and making sure to use dental floss. Brushing teeth immediately after eating acidic foods is not recommended; it’s best to wait approximately thirty minutes to allow the natural oral environment to rebalance.
