In Denmark, the oak processionary moth is spreading, with local media already dubbing it a “caterpillar from hell,” reports Danish broadcaster TV2. The reason lies in its toxic hairs, which pose a danger to humans.
These hairs contain the protein thaumetopoein, which can cause skin irritation, severe itching, and respiratory issues. In some cases, medical professionals do not rule out the development of a severe allergic reaction, including anaphylactic shock.
According to local media, after the summer holidays, the Danish government plans to hold a special meeting dedicated to the spread of these insects and measures to combat them.
The oak processionary moth has already been detected in the municipalities of Odense, Nyborg, Kerteminde, Nordfyns, Copenhagen, Morsø, and Herning.
Experts advise avoiding contact with the caterpillars and their nests, and if symptoms appear after exposure, seeking medical help.
