Samsung Electronics America plans to cut 739 jobs in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, in preparation for moving the company’s US headquarters to Texas. This is reported by Reuters citing a WARN notice filed with the relevant state authorities.
The impacted division is responsible for sales and marketing in the US of smartphones, televisions, displays, and home appliances of Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. (KS:005930).
According to a press release from US Congressman Josh Gottheimer published in September, Samsung Electronics America has about 1,200 employees in New Jersey. The number of positions listed in the notice is more than 60% of that workforce.
Samsung said the changes are related to the planned relocation of its headquarters from New Jersey to Texas by the end of 2026.
According to the company, most impacted employees were offered the opportunity to relocate. Samsung also stressed that it is wrong to call the process layoffs, but did not reveal how many employees agreed to move.
The move may also lead to changes in the organizational structure of the division. Samsung noted that some employees may be unable to relocate, and certain functions will be adjusted in accordance with the company’s business priorities.
The division in New Jersey specializes in consumer electronics and does not include Samsung’s semiconductor business. The company’s chip production is primarily concentrated in Texas, where the South Korean conglomerate is actively investing in manufacturing facilities and research centers.
Under US law, companies are required to file WARN (Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification) notices before conducting mass layoffs or plant closures. These notices are intended to give employees, local authorities, and employment services time to prepare for large-scale reductions.
Samsung’s notice is the first official assessment of how many jobs in New Jersey may be impacted by the headquarters relocation.
The company did not provide details on the timing of changes for individual positions, the location of the new headquarters, or the number of positions that are planned to be moved to Texas.
