
As soon as you step into a sauna, your body starts reacting naturally to the heat. Your heart rate increases, your skin heats up, and you begin to sweat. This activity not only helps you relax but also gives your immune system a significant boost.
Research from Finland indicates that a single visit to the sauna raises the production of white blood cells, which then enter the bloodstream. These cells act as the body’s primary defense mechanism, protecting against infections and identifying dangerous threats before they escalate into serious health issues. The findings were published in the journal Temperature.
Scientists discovered that just 30 minutes in the sauna, with a brief cold shower break in the middle, increases the number of circulating white blood cells. This includes neutrophils and lymphocytes, which are crucial for fighting off infections.
The levels of these cells remained elevated for only a short period. About 30 minutes after the session, they returned to normal. However, this temporary spike still matters. It demonstrates that the body can quickly mobilize its defenses when conditions change.
The study involved 51 adults with an average age of 50, providing insights into how middle-aged individuals respond to heat stress.
White blood cells don’t just remain in the bloodstream all day. Many of them stay in the tissues, waiting for signals that something is wrong. Once they enter circulation, they can travel throughout the body and monitor for harmful invaders.
Ilkka Heinonen, a researcher at the University of Turku, stated that the results suggest a sauna session may mobilize additional white blood cells from tissues into the bloodstream, after which they return once the session ends.
“This periodic release of white blood cells into the bloodstream is beneficial because, once they leave their storage sites, they are better able to patrol the body and respond to pathogens,” Heinonen noted.
This temporary movement could help keep the immune system on alert, even if the effect is short-lived. The body’s reaction to heat in a sauna closely resembles its response to physical exercise. During a workout, the body sees an increase in white blood cells. It uses this process to improve its ability to detect and respond to dangers.
In both cases, the body responds to stress by activating its defense mechanisms. This is a quick way to stay prepared without waiting for a real threat to appear. Sauna use seems to trigger a similar reaction, but without the physical strain of exercise. It doesn’t replace an active lifestyle, but it could offer another way to support the body’s defenses.
The researchers also looked at cytokines. These are small proteins that help immune cells communicate. They send signals telling the body when to ramp up or tone down its response. On average, a sauna session did not cause significant changes in these cytokines. However, there was one interesting detail.
“But interestingly, the levels of several cytokines changed depending on how much body temperature rose during the sauna session,” said lead researcher Professor Jari Laukkanen from the University of Eastern Finland. “No such relationship was observed between white blood cell counts and body temperature changes.”
This suggests that the intensity of the heat may influence certain aspects of the immune response, even if it doesn’t affect all of them equally.
Regular sauna use has long been linked to benefits like better heart health and lower stress levels. These new findings point to another piece of the puzzle. The immune system may also get a small, temporary boost.
Still, the researchers were cautious in their conclusions. The study looked at the results of a single session and its immediate effects. It doesn’t prove long-term changes or lasting benefits for the immune system. Even so, the body’s rapid response shows its flexibility and reactivity.
A simple routine like visiting the sauna might not only help you unwind. It could subtly encourage your immune system to stay active, even if only for a short while.
