An investigation has been launched in Italy into the murder of sports journalist Luigi (Luca) Esposito, whose body, bearing signs of burns, was found in an agricultural area of the municipality of Eboli in the province of Salerno. This was reported by Rai News on July 22.
“Esposito was most likely the victim of a (possibly intentional) crime committed following a brutal beating that left his bones broken. The body was then set on fire in an attempt to erase all traces,” the publication states.
It is noted that the final cause of death will be determined after further examinations. At this stage, law enforcement is not linking the murder to Esposito’s professional activities, and the main line of inquiry revolves around his personal life. The investigation is also looking into the circumstances of the journalist’s final hours and his social circle.
Special attention is being paid to Esposito’s claims about working at the regional environmental protection agency. The agency has stated that he was never employed by them and had no professional ties to the organization.
On July 16, Italy’s ruling parties called for a pardon for a 72-year-old jeweler convicted in a case involving the killing of armed robbers who were looting his store. The incident occurred in 2021, when jewelry store owner Mario Roggero shot and killed two men and injured a third after they robbed his shop in the Italian town of Grinzane Cavour. The court sentenced Roggero to 14 years and 9 months in prison.
