
Christof Koch, a leading authority in neuroscience, expressed doubts about the core tenet of materialism — that consciousness is simply a product of the brain’s physical processes — during the 15th symposium “Behind and Beyond the Brain.” The BIAL Foundation published his presentation.
Today’s neuroscience can identify which brain regions become active when a person views objects, recalls memories, feels pain, or makes decisions. Yet the so‑called “hard problem of consciousness” remains unsolved: there is still no explanation for why physical neural activity is accompanied by subjective experience at all.
Koch focused on three areas of uncertainty. The first concerns whether conscious experience can be fully reduced to the brain’s physical processes. The second relates to physics’ current understanding of the nature of “reality.” The third involves hard‑to‑explain human experiences, particularly near‑death phenomena — including mystical experiences and terminal lucidity, the sudden return of clear consciousness shortly before death, sometimes even in patients with severe dementia.
The scientist acknowledges that such phenomena do not prove consciousness can exist independently of the brain. However, he argues they must be studied seriously, if only because they reveal gaps in current scientific explanations.
Koch is a proponent of the Integrated Information Theory (IIT), which attempts to describe consciousness using mathematical principles. According to him, consciousness emerges in systems that integrate vast amounts of information into a unified whole. It depends not just on the total volume of information, but crucially on the nature and depth of the connections between its elements.
This idea is sometimes described as a scientific version of panpsychism — the notion that consciousness may be a fundamental property of nature itself.
